Skild AI Raises $300M to Develop Scalable AI Foundation Model for Robotics

Skild AI, an AI robotics company established a flexible foundation model for robotics, they publicized they closed raising $300 million in their first stage of funding. The round was directed by Lightspeed Venture Partners, Coatue, SoftBank Group, and Jeff Bezos (through Bezos Expeditions), with taking part from Felicis Ventures, Sequoia, Menlo Ventures, General Catalyst, CRV, Amazon, SV Angel, and Carnegie Mellon University. The total funding collected for the company is $1.5 B.

Skild AI is making intelligence that is based in the physical world. The company is exceeding the data barrier in robotics, training its model on at least 1,000X more data points than rival models. As compared to vertically designed robots that are created for particular applications, Skild’s model caters as a shared, all-purpose brain for multiple manifestations of robots, use cases, and tasks, including manipulation, locomotion, and navigation.

From resilient quadrupeds understanding unfavorable physical conditions to vision-based humanoids carrying out proficient manipulation of objects for compound household and industrial tasks, the company’s model will allow the utilization of low-cost robots end-to-end in a large range of industries and applications.

What CEO and Co-Founder of Skild AI Stated

The macroscale model we are creating defines exceptional generalization and emergent abilities across robots and tasks, offering notable potential for automation within real-world ecology,” said Deepak Pathak, CEO and Co-Founder of Skild AI. ” We have faith Skild AI displays a great transformation in how robotics will be scaled, and can change the entire physical economy.”

What President and Co-Founder of Skild AI Stated

With common purpose task robots that can safely carry out any automated task, in any environment, and with any category of embodiment, we can multiply the ability of robots, standardize their cost, and support the grievously understaffed labor market,” stated Abhinav Gupta, President and Co-Founder of Skild AI.

What Partner of Lightspeed Venture Partners Stated

Skild AI has gained notable success in a short period, and we have faith they’re a unique organization that could transform our opinion of what machines can do,” said Raviraj Jain, Partner, Lightspeed Venture Partners. ” Deepak and Abhinav have fueled the advancements in robotics, and their idea around using the basic principles of foundation models into the real world places the industry on the path of general purpose robotics.”

What Partner of Sequoia Capital Has to Say

A GPT-3 moment is coming to the world of robotics,” said Stephanie Zhan, Partner, Sequoia Capital. “It will bring a notable transformation that brings enhancement similar to what we’ve observed in the world of digital intelligence, to the physical world. Since collaborating with Skild AI at the first round, I have deep faith that they are the team to chase one of the most progressive visions of our era.

Gupta and Pathak are former professors at Carnegie Mellon University with a combined experience of 25 years in AI and robotics, and they have been commended for countless industry successes like self-supervised robotics, curiosity-driven agents, and adaptive robot learning. They have a 150+ h-index, around 90k citations, and have obtained so many awards for their work. The Skild AI team includes robotics and AI experts from Meta, Tesla, Nvidia, Amazon, Google, and the best schools including Carnegie Mellon University, Stanford, and UC Berkeley.

Skild AI has a truly flexible approach to establishing foundational models for robot manipulation and locomotion. Coatue is excited to push its effort to revolutionize robotics, moving from pre-programmed to dynamic, adjustable robots,” said Sri Viswanath, General Partner at Coatue and former CTO of Atlassian. With ”Skild’s technology, there is the possibility of disrupting today’s physical economy, making use of robots for hazardous jobs like in machine rooms, containments, etc., and to sectors who are facing huge labor shortages like in security and hospitals.”
